About Research Down Syndrome

Our Mission

The mission of Research Down Syndrome is to expand and enhance life opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome by funding scientific research directed toward the understanding and amelioration of impaired cognition. Research Down Syndrome educates and inspires a caring society to fund biomedical research findings which will translate into safe and effective, approved therapies to treat the cognitive impairment in individuals with Down syndrome of all ages.

Our Founding Principles
Research • Respect • Results

Research

We support and fund research initiatives designed to identify the basis of the intellectual impairments associated with Down syndrome, including Alzheimer’s disease and learning disabilities. Research Down Syndrome supports research which will advance the development of safe and effective therapies with the potential to improve the cognitive abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.

Respect

We deeply respect each individual with Down syndrome as important members of our communities.  We are grateful for the medical and research communities whose ongoing efforts make it possible for many people to live longer, participate in life more actively and fight disease more vigorously.

We thank suppporters throughout the world, who, individually, or through organizations and foundations, enrich the lives of Down syndrome individuals and inspire thousands more to do the same.  We all join in the belief that individuals with Down syndrome deserve our greatest research efforts.

Results

We support research designed to contribute to the understanding and amelioration of cognitive impairment associated with Down syndrome. Research Down Syndrome prioritizes funding toward programs with a high probability of readily contributing to the development of safe and effective therapies. Much of Research Down Syndrome's administrative cost is provided by pledges from friends of the Down syndrome community, which allows a greater amount of all other donations to be directly applied to this research effort. We are indebted to those people who provide support for this cause and will continue to work to assure that all contributions are applied in a responsible and goal oriented fashion.

Scientific Advisory Board

Research Down Syndrome supports research at leading institutions that are studying the basis of the intellectual impairments associated with Down syndrome.
The funding supports internationally recognized scientists and clinicians based on recommendations by our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB is comprised of highly distinguished and accomplished researchers and clinicians in the area of Down syndrome and related biomedical research fields.

The Scientific Advisory Board includes:

David Cox, MD, PhD
Biotherapeutics & Innovation Center, Pfizer, Inc.

Ronald Evans, PhD
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies

Michael Harpold, PhD, Chair
Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation
